Although migrating raptors may be seen nearly anywhere in the Americas during their travels, some areas see particularly massive groups where the landscape forces multiple routes together. \n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tPanama is part of the Mesoamerican Land Corridor, the most important migration pathway in the Americas. More than two million raptors can be seen as they migrate through Panama each year, making it the third largest raptor migration in the world (the other two largest are in Eliat, Israel and Vera Cruz, Mexico).\n<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-3132-0-0-1\" class=\"widget_text so-panel widget widget_custom_html panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><div style=\"text-align: center;\" data-title-color=\"#443f3f\" data-headings-color=\"#000000\" class=\"widget_text panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-3132-0-0-1\" ><div class=\"textwidget custom-html-widget\"><h4 style=\"font-weight: lighter; margin-top: -20px;\"><em>\n\tWe understand some aspects of migration, but much of the process remains a mystery. Here\u2019s what we know:\n<\/em><\/h4><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-3132-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-has-style\" ><div style=\"padding: 0px 0; \" data-overlay=\"true\" data-overlay-color=\"#000000\" class=\"panel-row-style panel-row-style-for-3132-1\" ><div id=\"pgc-3132-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-3132-1-0-0\" class=\"widget_text so-panel widget widget_custom_html panel-first-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-title-color=\"#443f3f\" data-headings-color=\"#000000\" class=\"widget_text panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-3132-1-0-0\" ><div class=\"textwidget custom-html-widget\"><h3>\n\tSeasonality\n<\/h3>\n<p>\n\tMigratory raptors, like other migratory birds, travel great distances every year to take advantage of seasonal resources. Generally, the following seasons correspond to those in North America (though a few species follow the same pattern with South American seasons instead).\n<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-3132-1-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_siteorigin-panels-builder panel-last-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-title-color=\"#443f3f\" data-headings-color=\"#443f3f\" class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-3132-1-0-1\" ><div id=\"pl-w632f178e85ca4\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-w632f178e85ca4-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-has-style\" ><div style=\"padding: 0px 0; \" data-overlay=\"true\" data-overlay-color=\"#000000\" class=\"panel-row-style panel-row-style-for-w632f178e85ca4-0\" ><div id=\"pgc-w632f178e85ca4-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-w632f178e85ca4-0-0-0\" class=\"widget_text so-panel widget widget_custom_html panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-title-color=\"#443f3f\" data-headings-color=\"#443f3f\" class=\"widget_text panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-w632f178e85ca4-0-0-0\" ><div class=\"textwidget custom-html-widget\"><p>\n\t<strong style=\"color: black\">Summer<\/strong> is the breeding season when birds nest in high-resource areas. These locations contain plenty of food to raise their young and longer days than in the tropics, providing more time for hunting.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong style=\"color: black\">Fall<\/strong> is when the weather starts to change: days get shorter, it gets colder, and food becomes less abundant so birds begin leaving their breeding grounds and heading towards their wintering grounds.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong style=\"color: black\">Winter<\/strong> usually has very few resources available in temperate climates, so raptors move to warmer areas in Central\/South America where food is comparably more abundant (though less abundant than in breeding grounds during the summer, causing high levels of competition).  \n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong style=\"color: black\">Spring<\/strong> is when birds begin to return to their breeding grounds. By soaring in these thermals, raptors can easily gain altitude and save energy.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong style=\"color: black\">Updrafts<\/strong> create similar conditions as thermals, but are created when wind strikes a ridgeline and is pushed upwards. These updrafts may be more consistent over an area than thermals, allowing birds to save energy over a distance by following landscape features.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong style=\"color: black\">Obstacles,<\/strong> like large bodies of water which don\u2019t create thermals, are avoided by raptors because they require too much effort and don\u2019t provide areas to land and rest in case they get tired or encounter a storm.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong style=\"color: black\">Leading lines<\/strong> are geographical features like coastlines and mountain ranges that birds follow as a sort of \u201cmap\u201d to ensure they\u2019re traveling the correct direction.\n<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Varios tipos de aves migran entre Am\u00e9rica del Norte y del Sur cada a\u00f1o, y las aves rapaces no son una excepci\u00f3n.
